This handcrafted flying tamarack bird decoy is made using traditional Cree techniques, carefully woven from natural tamarack twigs.
Tamarack decoys have a long history among Cree and other Indigenous cultures of northern Canada. Traditionally used as functional duck decoys during hunting, their natural materials blended seamlessly with the landscape and waterways. Today, these pieces are appreciated as cultural artworks and decorative objects that reflect the deep connection between craftsmanship, traditional knowledge, and the land.
Tamarack twig weaving requires patience and skill, as each twig is carefully selected and shaped to form the bird’s body and wings. The result is a lightweight yet detailed sculpture that carries forward a tradition practiced in northern communities for generations.
Each decoy is individually handmade, making every piece unique.
