Cree Ribbon Shirts by Alexandria Coon

Each ribbon shirt is individually created by Cree artist Alexandria Coon of Mistissini, Eeyou Istchee. Beginning with a classic button-up shirt, Alexandria transforms each piece with carefully layered satin ribbons, ric-rac trim, floral fabrics inspired by beadwork, and distinctive colour combinations.

Every shirt is unique. The placement of the ribbons, fabrics, trim and colours varies from one design to the next, making each piece a one-of-a-kind garment.

Ribbon shirts hold an important place in many Indigenous communities and are often worn with pride at gatherings, ceremonies, graduations, weddings, powwows and other celebrations. These shirts offer a contemporary expression of Cree artistry while directly investing in an artist from Eeyou Istchee.

Care

• Hand wash cold or machine wash on a gentle cycle, inside out
• Hang to dry
• Iron on low heat from the reverse side
• Avoid direct heat on satin, glitter and decorative ribbon
