Handmade Birch Bark Basket & Canoe – Doreen Stevens

Handcrafted by Algonquin artist Doreen Stevens of Kitigan Zibi, these traditional pieces are made using natural materials gathered and prepared for the work.

Both the basket and canoe are constructed from birch bark and hand-laced with spruce roots. The canoe is framed along the rim with willow branches, which may appear green when harvested in summer and reddish when harvested in winter. The canoe seats are made from butternut wood.

Each piece reflects the natural characteristics of the materials used, so variations in colour, bark markings, shape and dimensions are part of what makes every piece unique.
