Detail
A miniature axe hand-carved by Cree artist Gordon H. Blackned of Waskaganish. The handle is carved from natural wood with the grain left showing, the butt end is painted bright yellow, and the head is painted red with a silver-grey blade edge.
A hanging string is tied around the handle, so the axe can hang from a hook, a rear-view mirror or a tree, or sit on a shelf. Tools like the axe have long been part of life on the land in Eeyou Istchee, and this little replica turns that everyday knowledge into a keepsake.
String Colour
The hanging string will be yellow, orange or red. The colour can't be selected, and string length varies from piece to piece.
